The company looks back on a long history in the international trade of non-ferrous concentrates. Soon after Metallgesellschaft AG was founded in 1881, the company started its trade activities as an in-house division. Over the decades, the volume of this business was increased substantially through Metallgesellschaft's close contacts with mines and smelters/recycling facilities as well as through the development of a sound trading basis for concentrates.

Starting in 1994, the Metallgesellschaft Group went through various re-structuring processes during which MG Rohstoffhandel GmbH was founded in 1997 regrouping the activities in the field of non-ferrous commodities. In the years 1999/2000, mg technologies ag (formerly Metallgesellschaft AG) focused its core business on engineering and the chemicals industry and therefore divested its other shareholdings. In the year 2003, mg technologies ag (today GEA Group AG) further restructured its core business with the focus on engineering, spinning off the shareholdings in the chemical industry.

Today, MG Rohstoffhandel GmbH continues to be a member of the GEA Group AG and is closely linked to GEA´s electrolytic zinc smelter Ruhr Zink GmbH, located at Datteln, Germany. With its experienced team MG Rohstoffhandel GmbH finds itself well-positioned to further expand its activities and meet the challenges of the international non-ferrous commodities markets.
